31 Nightmares 2016: The 3rd

You cannot tell the story of “Daydreams” without mentioning “Nightmares” and vice/versa.

I’ve teased at the thought of Nightmares before but I never once got into her story or how she came about.

Last year during the first 31 Nightmares in 2015, I shared a very personal custom work that had quite an eerie story attached. That nightmare can be found here in 31 Nightmares (2015): The 4th.

Her

Those nightmares haunted me for a long time due to an actual strange event. A relative used to live in a small one bedroom apartment before having children. One of the most charming traits of the humble space was a very large bathroom with mirrors on each wall.

Now, if you’ve ever placed two mirrors parallel to each other, you’d know it creates this sort of dizzying optical illusion of infinite copies of the reflection. One afternoon, when I was there, I stopped as if something told me to. What I saw about seven or eight reflections down the row still haunts me. This inspired The Tale of Two Mirrors.

It was me, but not me, and it moved differently than the others, if only for a short moment in time. Perhaps it was a daydream, something I’ve often done, and half of the reason this nickname came about. Maybe it was a delusion, a hallucination and the early onset of what later would show up in my young adulthood. Though it is possible something paranormal took place, a waking dream of sorts.

Whatever the case was she inspired a character, and that drawing, made from my own silhouette.

Nightmarish Sounds

Upon giving you a peek into my world last year in Cards on the Table you first heard this next track.

When telling the story of Nightmares, one couldn’t help but think there needed to be a certain “mood music” to it. I wanted it to feel like something you’d hear in a horror movie. So I messed around with different instruments and pitch until we got just the right sound that would make your spine slither.

This dark ambient track has become one of the most listened to.
