31 Nightmares 2018: The 19th

It’s time for another trip down Memory Lane…

The following image was first shared in 2013 as part of my Winter Gallery: Part II posting. What wasn’t shared was the interesting story behind it…

I used to live much further from where I currently reside. I’ve bounced around the state of New Jersey throughout my life. In 1995-1996 my grandmother was going through a very messy divorce and she started hinting that we were going to move. Right around that time I started having this recurring dream about this small patch of woods I had never seen before in my waking life or in my dreams. The dreams intrigued me due to their vivid nature.

What I couldn’t shake during this time was the sense that this place existed somewhere in real life. I don’t know how I knew it—I just did.

About a year later, my grandmother found a condo in a quiet little area and informed me this is where we’d be moving. The day we set out to plant our roots in this new home, I was instantly shocked as we neared the entrance. Just around the corner from where we were about to live was the little patch of woods I had seen in my dreams. The place had a foreboding energy about it. The best way I could describe it was “an otherworldly feel” in my eyes. The moment of realization sent chills right through me. I had strange instances of what some would refer to as psychic vision before, but nothing like this. I was rattled to the core.

We moved there anyway and I would up living in that home until 2012. Fun fact? The place was haunted too. Extremely. Like Poltergeist-level haunted.

This image was taken years after I moved in. The area is still untouched to this day. I edited the colors a bit because this was originally going to be used for a book cover of my own. That book later got scrapped after my laptop died and 8 chapters of the novel were not able to be recovered. Soon after, I gave up writing.

31 Nightmares 2017: The 20th

The Void

This year during my work with DJ Matticus & Revis Edgewater I’ve gotten a new perspective on elliptical designs and spheres of all sorts, it’s no wonder I started dreaming of black holes. Our work together on sci-fi and fantasy novels this year also ended up in this year’s #31Nightmares, as one of my concept sketches that was an early design for an upcoming fantasy novel, was also something I dreamt about, an endless void, an imploded star, a strange region in space. It was beautiful but terrifying in my nightmares.

Wisps

Sometimes the strange and otherworldly creeps into my head when I’ve had a particularly stressful period of time. My body will literally feel drained by the mental taxing and eventually it gives out and I’ll head into a deep sleep. This is the usual recipe for my nightmares.

You’ve heard me describe settings of hope within these dreams before here during #31Nightmares.

This artwork is the visual representation of a place that brought hope inside one of my most terrifying dreams. Myself and a group of friends were being chased by a lake like an old-school splatter movie. Though, from a first person perspective in my nightmares, this was not the sort of place I wanted to stay long. These little wisps were lights that helped lead us out of a barren area of the forest.

31 Nightmares 2017: The 17th

Tonight we continue our journey down the surreal horror path with some more of my early concept pieces done this year. This one was based off of a nightmare where this inky apparition showed up in a crystal ball, only to be seen face to face later in the dream.

She’s yet another that’s inspired more than one piece of art.

Sleepy Sundays: Dismissed

Dismissed
Dismissed

Fall seems to be coming to a close as swiftly as November. Both are eager to get out the door before winter begins roaring in. All of the little animals around here are scurrying around preparing for the upcoming colder months—much like some humans I’ve seen lately.

I do always get a tiny bit dreary as autumn says its final goodbyes. The past few days there’s been not much other than gray skies around here. Although I’m working on a lot more colorful projects for friends, in my own designs, I get to play.

In my own work, I get to be a bit moodier.

When you’re in a [mood], does it come out in your work? 😉

Have a shifting Sunday!
