Site Notice: Reconstruction

Well darlings, it’s been quite a while.

We will certainly update you about all that & the reasons why soon.

First though, we’ve got more pressing matters at hand. Our business & website are going through yet another complete overhaul. While all things are being shuffled around & new security measures begin to take hold, I will be redesigning the place from top to bottom & fixing some of the formatting issues with text that occur when switching views from desktop to mobile devices.

We are going for a cleaner look with less of a cluttery mess in our sidebar area.

Some important points to mention

  • We will be updating our Terms due to incidents that occurred over the break
  • There will be cross-platform changes & updates (Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube)
  • Art Services are temporarily suspended until April. (We are booked solid & consulting new clients.)
  • Sleepy Sundays has come to an end. (For now, until further notice. We are planning something new.)
  • We are currently searching for a social media manager. Contact us for more info.
  • Snapping Turtle is interested in branching out even further. (More details on this coming up.)

We’ve missed you tremendously. Thank you for being patient & supporting us while we had a lot going on.

We ask for a little more of that patience while we get things back in order here & sweep out all the dust creatures that creeped up inside our little castle in the clouds while we were away.

Love Always,

The Snapping Turtle Family

Ascent

We are turning a new corner here at CardCastles and would like you to join us.

Plans are in the works for quite a few changes in the upcoming months. We will no longer be doing our regular #SleepySundays posts for the remainder or the year.

We are also unsure if we will be resurrecting #31Nightmares for this upcoming October. This will depend largely on community demand.

These pauses are for good reason. We are working on something much bigger as a team here at home for the future of our business, Snapping Turtle, that has been playing a larger role here these past few years.

I am also individually working on three book-related projects the rest of this summer, and likely into the fall.

We will certainly miss the old traditions for a while, but times, they are a-changin’ —and with it, so are we.

Updates will come as these changes go into effect. We thank you for your continued support. Keep an eye on our social media accounts for news about upcoming diaries and anything else as we near the end of this summer.

Mermaids

Troubled Waters

I had an interesting last few days.

My younger cousin and I have been dialoguing a lot more recently and it’s opened my eyes to so many new things. One would be, I’ve never realized how similar we are as adults. I remember us running around as children and always having a great deal in common, but was blind to the fact that it transferred into adulthood.

We spoke about our family and our ethnicity and so many wonderful things. She is raising a child of her own and she is doing an amazing job, even being dealt a shitty hand. I am in awe of her. At 21 she has more maturity than some people twice her age.

This all sparked conversation in my own home about race and ethnicity and even more wonderful things. As that conversation was happening, I was sent some links to something that made me sick on Twitter.

People were (and still are) complaining about the race of a girl cast to play the new Ariel in Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

What a bunch of fuckwits. Talk about a waste of space.

I’ve drawn and designed mermaids many times in my life and now I do so professionally, and I assure you, no where does it state they have to be a certain shade. I’ve even designed some with a lavender skin, or a greenish hue, sometimes pink; sometimes blue.

In the words of Jim Morrison, people are strange.

There are events going on in our country that are in dire need of attention, but these are the things some choose to get angry about.

It’s maddening.

The Shining Sea

I have a niece that I already know will very much look up to the new Ariel. Right now, her favorite is Moana for similar reasons. That alone makes me smile. That alone makes me want to give every one of those people complaining a great, big Jersey hello. (That’s the middle finger for those of you that’ve never been out here.)

So with that said, I hardly ever do fan art. About 98% of my art are originals. That being the case, I am going to make an exception for this next one and maybe a few others. After all, I plan on doing more of these for this movie coming up if time allows.

The following early concept is one of a limited edition series I’m doing on mermaids. This first one was inspired by the new Ariel.

Instead of me going back at some of those people that are spreading racist ideals on Twitter, this is going to be my retaliation. Share it if you can. Art speaks and it also teaches. Let the art teach. Maybe they can see its beauty and learn something.

Let the art teach.

Sleepy Sundays: A Glow in Your Eyes

A Glow in Your Eyes ©️ 2019 Snapping Turtle Arts | cardcastlesinthesky.com

This weekend we are both happy and grateful since our son is finished with his school year. He has made so much progress and completed so many of his goals this year. He is an inspiration to us sometimes just as much as our family is to him.

Despite our hardships, I am grateful we can continue this business & I can keep designing. I love this little family we created and the larger ones outside of this one, and of course the one I came from.

This design is a background for future projects, but for now I’m still adding it to the gallery as wall art.

Have a serene Sunday ❤️

Sleepy Sundays: Roses

Roses have always been symbolic to me. Some give them as gifts. We see them at weddings; funerals.

I’m sharing an older, more simple design today that some of you may have already seen if you follow any of my “Daydreams” accounts on social media.

I share this in memory of my late father, for Father’s Day. & Also for my Uncle Pat, who passed away in January. My great uncle was another one of the amazing father figures I’ve been blessed with in this life.

I miss them both terribly, but they’ve made me realize just how lucky I am to still have some special men in my life that hold the title of “father” in more way than one.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there

& roses, for all the ones we’ve lost.

Have a special Sunday.

Sleepy Sundays: Scales

Scales

Burnt Lilac Sunset

Each week of our life lately has seemed like a series of tests. It’s been happening to everyone in my family.

In my designs, I’ve been working on different palette scales for backgrounds, for later projects.
Synchronicity is a strange & beautiful thing.

Have a pleasant Sunday
