Mermaids

Troubled Waters

I had an interesting last few days.

My younger cousin and I have been dialoguing a lot more recently and it’s opened my eyes to so many new things. One would be, I’ve never realized how similar we are as adults. I remember us running around as children and always having a great deal in common, but was blind to the fact that it transferred into adulthood.

We spoke about our family and our ethnicity and so many wonderful things. She is raising a child of her own and she is doing an amazing job, even being dealt a shitty hand. I am in awe of her. At 21 she has more maturity than some people twice her age.

This all sparked conversation in my own home about race and ethnicity and even more wonderful things. As that conversation was happening, I was sent some links to something that made me sick on Twitter.

People were (and still are) complaining about the race of a girl cast to play the new Ariel in Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

What a bunch of fuckwits. Talk about a waste of space.

I’ve drawn and designed mermaids many times in my life and now I do so professionally, and I assure you, no where does it state they have to be a certain shade. I’ve even designed some with a lavender skin, or a greenish hue, sometimes pink; sometimes blue.

In the words of Jim Morrison, people are strange.

There are events going on in our country that are in dire need of attention, but these are the things some choose to get angry about.

It’s maddening.

The Shining Sea

I have a niece that I already know will very much look up to the new Ariel. Right now, her favorite is Moana for similar reasons. That alone makes me smile. That alone makes me want to give every one of those people complaining a great, big Jersey hello. (That’s the middle finger for those of you that’ve never been out here.)

So with that said, I hardly ever do fan art. About 98% of my art are originals. That being the case, I am going to make an exception for this next one and maybe a few others. After all, I plan on doing more of these for this movie coming up if time allows.

The following early concept is one of a limited edition series I’m doing on mermaids. This first one was inspired by the new Ariel.

Instead of me going back at some of those people that are spreading racist ideals on Twitter, this is going to be my retaliation. Share it if you can. Art speaks and it also teaches. Let the art teach. Maybe they can see its beauty and learn something.

Let the art teach.

Sleepy Sundays: Sun-baked Violets

Tomorrow is my mother’s birthday. It’s been so many years since she’s gone now. Yet, she never fails to enter my mind with a memory or make me laugh from one. I was speaking to a cousin of mine recently that feels just the same about her. We both wish she was still here with us to laugh. We miss her.

Whenever I decide to do a little tribute piece for her, purple hues often find their way in as they were here favorite. There’s a tendency that I also stick some sort of flowers in there as well since they remind me of her.

The seasons are changing rapidly around here but somehow this weekend winter managed to hang on. Despite the cold temps these surreal scenes of the entrance of spring managed to creep into my dreams and designs. Spring is very close around here, and you can tell by the trees. You are starting to see little bits of green pop up here and there. Soon even the cold will not be able to stop it. Everything will come into bloom. I’ve always liked the change of seasons around here for that reason, and the beginning of March around here usually signals spring. —Usually.

After talking it over with a few of those nearest & dearest to me, I plan on using this concept as a base-work for future endeavors. The neat detail about it is, the original is a transparent mask, so I can place that little branch with our feathered friends on it just about anywhere.

What do you think we should use it for? The possibilities are endless.

Have a peaceful Sunday!

Whispers in the Wind © 2018 Snapping Turtle Arts | cardcastlesinthesky.com

This design was inspired by a nightmare I had a few years ago about the wind having a loud sound and then later a voice. It was quite frightening and happened around winter season. The thoughts stirred up after the dream have brought out more then one of my designs and I’ve worked them into a collection.

Greetings, my darlings. It has certainly been a while. If you’ve been curious as to where your girl Daydreams has been, please check up on my latest Daydreams Diary or you could always follow on Twitter or Instagram (links in the sidebar) for more timely updates.

This design is my first attempt back into the world of concept art. Although I’ve only been away for about a month, you’d be surprised how rusty I’ve become. Despite all that, I’m going to be hitting the ground running this month due to a recent need to make my services available to a much wider audience of clients. You will likely be seeing an expansion of Snapping Turtle happening here at CardCastles and lots of promo material.

I’m not sure yet what this design is going to be used for and it will likely be very brushed up before it hits a client’s hands. Whatever the case, I was happy to create this little surrealistic landscape after being away from the art world for what felt like aeons.

Have you missed seeing these designs here? What have you been up to while I was away? Do tell. You know I love a good coffee chat.

Have a surrealistic Sunday!

Sleepy Sundays: Spaces

There’s been a lot going on in the world of Snapping Turtle recently involving a possible move that is no longer happening. We are trying to remain open anyway due to the changes. We apologize for any rescheduling inconveniences. To hopefully somehow make up for our crazy personal lives there are again two designs being shared this weekend instead of just one.

You’ll have to stay tuned for their stories as we transition into new horizons.

A lot is changing here at CardCastles and in our lives and we are thankful some of you have continued with us and myself during this journey.

Have a peaceful Sunday

Sleepy Sundays: Fever Pitch

There hasn’t been a piece this abstract in my folders for quite some time. Yes, I dive into the surreal quite often, but this one is different. I’m actually planning on saving this one for a client as a basis for future endeavors in the sci-fi genre.

What makes it so unique to my collections though is the inspiration. The other night I had a very strange, and wildly interesting dream. Observing my surroundings, it appeared I was in some other space and time completely. The entire experience was astounding really. I woke up in awe trying to analyze everything before life slapped me back into reality.

Maybe it’s the process of moving driving me mildly insane. Or just may-be…something else.

Have you stepped out of your comfort zone lately?

Have a dreamy Sunday!
