After talking it over with a few of those nearest & dearest to me, I plan on using this concept as a base-work for future endeavors. The neat detail about it is, the original is a transparent mask, so I can place that little branch with our feathered friends on it just about anywhere.
What do you think we should use it for? The possibilities are endless.
The ocean has long been a companion of mine throughout life. With the weather changing and my son getting older, he is starting to show interest in some of these same aquatic activities. I’ve been shuffling around more home decor and greetings designs, some of which have to do with children’s rooms and seasonal decorative pieces. This all had me thinking of underwater themes I’ve done in the past. These sea turtles started from sketches, but I plan to have a few more of them appear in some of my newer designs these next few months.
The northeast region got blasted this weekend with some icy winds making it seem like the dead of winter when it’s really still fall. We’ve got a bunch of important milestones coming up for our son in his schooling. There are some changes going on in just about every aspect of my life. They are achy changes, but changes I am willing to accept. Some of this overdose of new I’m even starting to like.
This character concept that almost didn’t happen due to a busy schedule and some technical issues, was inspired by a busted mouse. No not an actual little furry guy, don’t worry. Nope, it was a busted mouse that I very much need in order to create any illustration at all. We had to replace it in order for me to be able to keep working, even in the midst of other family obligations.
I’m going to let my son name him. I think this little mouse would be cute for holiday greetings as well. He may make more appearances.
Has anything broken on you lately? Did you make the best of it?
I’ve had the pleasure of designing a lot of different characters this year from all different genres. None has been more fun than “The Queen” though as she’s horror-based and comes directly from, you guessed it—my nightmares.
The first sketches of her were set to be used for another project but I wound up working her into quite a few things, including this year’s 31Nightmares.
She may be pretty, but I assure you, she is a menacing figure in my dreams. Her head floats above her body. She only communicates by moving her hands, and telepathically.
I do hope you enjoy her. You may be seeing others from her realm.
Mothers are very often the start or beginning of something in a family. There’s been some new additions to mine in the past few weeks. Common conversation has been how much both of these new little family members resemble other family members, one being my late mother.
I’ve been grateful for the little pieces given back somehow in this strange trip we call life. They inspired this work.
